The Choir is always on the lookout for new members

Fact: Very few people 'cannot sing'

Having read those words does not automatically make you one of them. For those of you who drive it's almost certain you once said to yourself "I will never pass my driving test.

A solo-quality voice is not required. What you will need is the ability to blend in with others both musically and socially. We work hard at our music, but are not elitist. We are friendly and sociable with a loyal band of friends and supporters.

An audition is not required. Applicants need only bring with them enthusiasm, and if they are complete beginners a willingness to learn.

We will provide you with new friendships, lots of fun (with a few laughs thrown in as well). We also promise that you will take great satisfaction, enjoyment and reward from being a team player helping to create beautiful music.

Come on - Give it a go

If you believe you would enjoy singing but don't have a voice like Pavarotti or Russell Watson……

If you need a hobby or an interest that is totally rewarding…..

If you would like to make new friends with similar aspirations…..

Then the Luton Male Voice Choir is the place for you!

What's involved in singing with the Luton MVC?

You will be expected to attend weekly rehearsals and perform at about 10 – 12 concerts per year, both locally and elsewhere in the UK. There is a probation period that lasts for around three months, during which time there will be plenty of help on hand. The aim of the probationary period is to give you time to settle in and learn the routine, and to show your commitment to the choir through regular attendance etc. Towards the end of your probation the MD will check that you are ready for concerts and then the fun really begins. Whether it is in a local Church or in one of the great concert halls of the UK, singing with the Luton MVC is an unforgettable experience...

Simon Cowell won't be there...

...and you won't have to sing in front of everybody on your own

What do I get from being a member of the Luton MVC?

On a weekly basis you will get probably the finest singing/musical interpretation lesson for miles around, in the company of colleagues from all walks of life. You will become involved in producing some of the very best choral music in Britain. You will get that “buzz” when you have felt you have produced something that has given a lot of people pleasure – as well as yourself. You will also have that feeling of comradeship that comes from belonging to something that’s really worthwhile.

Will I enjoy it?

It will be confusing for a week or two, but persevere, and not only will you enjoy it, but you will also get a lot of satisfaction.

An observation from one of our new members:

"I decided to take the plunge not knowing quite what to expect or whether I had the ability or the capacity to make such a commitment. The first few weeks of rehearsals were somewhat daunting though always enjoyable. The range of the repertoire was totally unexpected, none of which I was remotely familiar with! To be alongside an experienced member was invaluable at this time and to realise that it wasn't all plain sailing for him also was comforting. It was also greatly beneficial to be warmly welcomed from the outset by all the members. During this time I found Ken's unbelievable drive and attention to detail quite amazing, and may it continue to be so, and enjoyed his sense of humour, once I got used to it! At last, after a few false starts due to previous commitments, I made my concert debut during which, although somewhat nervous, I got an incredible buzz and an overriding feeling of the tradition I was helping in a small way to perpetuate.

When the four sections harmonise it sounds so fantastic, I should have done this years ago!"

Membership FAQ

We have done our best to give a full picture of the Luton Male Voice Choir and its activities. However here are a few questions that prospective members sometimes ask.

1. What does it cost to become a member of the Luton Male Voice Choir?
We make every effort to make the financial commitment as small as possible. There is no joining fee. Full members pay a weekly subscription of £2 (or £100 / year). There is no charge during an initial probationary period, which enables you to attend rehearsals, get to know us and decide whether or not to become a full member.

2. Will I have to buy a uniform?
The Luton MVC uniform consists of a maroon jacket, choir tie, grey trousers, black shoes and socks, and a white shirt. Members are expected to provide a shirt, shoes and socks, but the other items are supplied free of charge by the choir (sometime with a nominal deposit to ensure that they are maintained in good condition)

3. Will I have to pass an audition?
No. Currently the Luton MVC does not hold formal auditions, although prospective members are expected to be able to sing in tune and to be able to pitch and hold notes. Our Musical Director continuously monitors the singing of each member and offers help where required.

4. I can’t read music. Does that matter?
Obviously it helps if you can read music, but it is not essential. Many of our current members cannot read music either, but are helped along by those who can. We are a very friendly choir and help each other as much as possible.

If there's anything else you feel we haven't covered please come along to a practice and discuss with any Committee Member, or Contact Us via the link on the left.
